Gift Gards From Restaurant.com Could Lead To A Scam

scamtruck.jpgHeads up! If you took our advice back in October and bought $25 gift cards for $2 from Restaurant.com, check your credit card bill. Consumerist reports that a company affiliated with the site has been charging a $14.95 monthly fee to the credit cards of folks who have made gift card purchases.

It sounded too good to be true. Guess it was.

UPDATE: The comments in the Consumerist post explain the whole situation; the person in question likely clicked on a special offer of some sort (something like "save $10 on your next purchase") and agreed to the terms, unfortunately not realizing that said terms included a monthly charge from "Shopping Essentials."

So, basically, Restaurant.com is OK to use, although it's probably a good idea to double-check your credit card statement if you've bought certificates there in the past. And if you buy more in the future, make sure to just refuse any offers that may pop up — they could end up being more expensive than you think.

  • I beg you to read the comments of that Consumerist post and you'll find that this is in fact not the case. Like many online retailers, when you finish an order at restaurant.com you are invited to sign up for some service and get a freebie (the fine print includes details about the subscription fee). Any savvy web shopper knows not to accept "freebies". By simply reading fine print, one can still get great deals at restaurant.com without the 14.95 fee.
