Potbelly Sandwiches Planning To Raise Prices, Expand Menu

As long as we’re talking business news — Crain’s Chicago Business reports that prices will be going up at Potbelly Sandwich Works.

Along with the price increase (from $4.15 to as high as $4.50), the Chicago-based chain will start offering the option to orderlarger sizes of their delish subs with extra meat and cheese, plus introduce a line of “skinny” sandwiches for folks who want to be, well, skinny:

The new offerings are a departure from founder Bryant Keil’s focus on a simple menu with one price and size, and it marks CEO Aylwin Lewis’s first major move since replacing Mr. Keil as chief executive in June. With bigger rivals like Connecticut’s Subway Restaurants aggressively marketing a greater choice of offerings, the changes appear to be an effort to better compete for customers who are eating out less.

“During these tough times, one price point might not work for everyone,” says Darren Tristano, an executive vice-president with Chicago-based food consultancy Technomic Inc.
