Valentine's Day: Prix Fixe Extravaganzas

chocheart.jpgIt's one month before Valentine's day — do you know what your plans are? Restaurants' reservation books are already starting to fill up for the Hallmark-sanctioned lovefest, which conveniently falls on a Friday night this year. So what's your romantic poison?

Blackbird is offering a $115/person eight-course extravaganza built around punningly loving ingredients (Rose and Beauty Heart radishes, Bull Blood beets), plus caviar and champagne. HB Home Bistro is also running a punning prix-fixe, featuring the giggle-inducing "cheek to cheek" appetizer — a double-plate of veal cheeks and pork cheeks. Presumably you have to hum your own Ella Fitzgerald accompaniment.

If the idea of the cheeks of two different animals horrifies you, Mana Food Bar has a meal for vegetarians (or vegetarian-lovers): $50 gets you three cruelty-free courses and two glasses of bubbly to wash it down with. The thrill is ramped up by the fact that they're not taking reservations, so you're either going to have to show up wicked early or come armed with an extra couple hundred bucks in cash to bribe some other couple out of their table.

Cheapest of all (but my personal favorite) is the $39 feast being staged by The Bristol: three shared appetizer plates, and your choice of sexy-sounding entrees like "daube of beef (short rib) with black olives and creamy leeks" or "chestnut agnolotti with winter squash, amaretti and Parmesan crema," plus chocolate truffles.

Swoon.
