Felony Franks: The Hot Dog Stand Staffed By Ex-Cons

felonyfranks_chijournal.jpgA new hot dog stand is scheduled to open soon on the Near West side: it's called Felony Franks and, as seems to be a requirement with hot dog stands these days, there's a gimmick. Hot Doug's is haute, Weiner's Circle is abusive, and Weiner & Still Champion will deep-fry anything. So what's Felony Franks up to? It'll be staffed by rehabilitated felons. Jim Andrews, the restaurant's owner, is hiring ex-offenders in large part out of sympathy for the fact that the requirement to disclose their criminal history makes it difficult for them to find jobs.

Not surprisingly, this isn't going over easily with all of the neighbors: Alderman Bob Fioretti says he "won't make it easy" for Felony Franks to open, and there are complaints from the neighbors that Felony Franks is on track to open too close to two area high schools.

There's also the worry that the name and logo (a hot dog behind bars) will glorify the criminal lifestyle: "Any business that wants to do business in the area should always think of having a positive impact," said area resident Monica Brown. Andrews points out that restaurants like Hooter's and Addiction aren't considered prohibitively offensive — and it's worth noting that those restaurants don't operate in service of individuals who need help getting their lives back together — the plan is for half of the Felony Franks' profits to be distributed among employees, and the other half to go to the non-profit Rescue Foundation, which Andrews founded to assist ex-offenders. Plus, Andrews has some killer ('scuse us) slogans worked up: "The Misdemeanor Weiner," for one. Or "Food So Good It's Criminal."

  • Congressman Danny K. Davis has recently sponsored and passed a major piece of federal legislation called the 2nd Chance Act in behalf of ex-offenders.

  • Thank you Jim Andrews for doing this! You are willing to give Ex- felons a second chance. My son is 3 years out of prison and has not been in trouble since. He still cannot get a job or a place to live. At what point have they paid their debt to society? I would definitely eat there!

  • I think the idea is great! I drive past there everyday and have been excited for it to open. I think the logo is adorable and love the concept. And this was BEFORE I knew it'd be helping out people as well! Best of luck to him and I know I'll be stopping there more than I should on my way home from work!

  • You have just got to give Mr. Andrews a lot of credit for doing something positive. What are you doing? Why don't you join him and stand up and offer a helping hand? There is a bill, HR 1529, before congress right now that offers a real second chance to first time non-violent felons. Check it out at wedeserveourlivesback.com or washingtonwatch.com. Sign a petition; call your congressman, get up and do something positive. Most of these people only want to be productive citizens again and the current law throws every obstacle imaginable in their path and then we wonder why the recidivism rate is so high. Think Martha Stewart or Wesley Snipes instead of Al Capone or someone from the Sopranos. Do as Mr. Andrews has so bravely done, take the lead in helping someone who has “paid their debt to society” get their lives back. Thank you Jim Andrews

  • I read that some uptight jerk of an Alderman, Fioretti is his name.... wants the name changed. DON'T DO IT. Stick to your rights, its a great name! I stand behind the name and Im in Law Enforcement... love it! " A Chicago alderman says he doesn't mind that a businessman plans to open a hot dog stand in his ward and hire former convicts to work there, but he does object to the stand's crime-linked theme. Alderman Fioretti said Friday his Second Ward on the city's West Side has major crime problems, so he thinks the stand's name, Felony Franks, is simply not in good taste. Fioretti also objected to several slogans, including: "Food so good, it's criminal," and "Home of the misdemeanor wiener."

  • This is a wonderful idea from a concerned citizen. No I have never heard of Jim Andrews but it's about time someone stepped up with a solution yet small but a start. I am not an ex-con, but I am aware of the consequences of being incarcerated. I will support this business and advertize to everyone I know. I would be interested in purchasing a franchise for the southside if it is available. Thanks Jim.

  • Don't use a credit card there...

  • I've been watching them paint the sign for the past few weeks. The name is a complete bummer. The concept is humane, but the execution(no pun intended) is stupidly gimmicky.

  • I'd eat there in a heartbeat. I think what he's doing is really great for the former felons who can't find work. The support and faith of members of the community is the fastest way to get ex-cons feeling like the law-abiding world is a place they want to be.
