Monca Eng is Leaving the Trib’s Food Dept to Become A Superhero

Sad news for food media: While she isn’t a casualty of the Trib’s layoffs per se, food writer extraordinaire Monica Eng’s journalistic skillz have been redistributed into the newspaper’s investigative/watchdog department. Eng announced the change in job description via her Twitter.

When we (a bit misty-eyed) got in touch to find out exactly what’s up, Eng told us in an email: “My new assignment was a surprise and in some ways I’m sad about it but also fairly excited. With so many papers downsizing and the economy tanking I’ve been afraid that the nation will turn to cheap crappy food and no one will be there to look at its effects and who’s benefiting. But the Tribune has chosen to throw more man and woman power behind investigative and watchdog journalism than ever. I’m really proud of this. And so, as much as I will miss chowing on the Tribune dime, I look forward to digging through documents tracking down whistleblowers and kicking some bad guys’ butts. And then writing about it in what I hope will be fun and compelling ways.”

We always knew Eng was a superhero, so it’s only appropriate that she’s going after the real bad guys (as much as we hate to admit it, cruddy restaurant service will never trump cackling corporate overlords in the battle of True Evil). But still, the Cheap Eats column will feel a little bit empty without her.
