A new category now appears on the menu at The Publican. Filed under "Kitchen" you'll find just one thing: for $10, you treat the kitchen staff to a six-pack of beer. The restaurant's spinning it as something that makes it "easy for guests to show their appreciation." We're not sure how we feel about this — is it crass, awesome, or so crass it's awesome?

  • I show my "appreciation" by going to the restaurant in the first place, and by tipping for good food and good service. What exactly are they doing to show ME some appreciation for coming to the restaurant and spending my hard-earned $ to support them?

  • It seems a little bit like putting a tip jar in a strip club. It's not that you don't want to reward their efforts, it's just that asking for it so bluntly breaks the shared illusion that this isn't a transactional relationship.

  • Any beer you can buy six of at the Publican for $10 would be an insult to the kitchen staff! Would much rather buy them one good beer to pass around for tasting. They are working after all!

  • Wait, so does that mean we don't have to tip anymore?
