New Releases: Foodie and A la Card 2010

Foodie in action - snazzy!
Foodie in action - snazzy!

Love or hate “foodie” as a word to describe people who are into food (don’t tell us, we’re so tired of talking about it), but Foodie as an iPhone app is much, much more palatable: developed by local food maven Ari Bendersky with Matt Marcus, it’s an OpenTable killer that gets you reservations at top-tier Chicago restaurants — so far there are 35 on board, including One Sixtyblue, Lula, and Naha. The real fun is the set of daily-changing bonuses (special menus, free treats, and prime tables) that are exclusive to Foodie users. The app is $1.99 to download and reservations run a buck apiece, with three free ones bundled into the purchase price (plus the first 250 to download get a year’s unlimited resys).

If you aren’t one of the cool kids with an iPhone (or even if you are), the 2010 A la Card Chicago deck is out. $30 gets you a deck of 52 ten-dollar gift cards to 52 area restaurants — and for five bucks extra you can add in a 2009 deck — even with only four weeks left in the year, it pays for itself pretty much immediately. The roundup of restaurants for next year is pretty darn awesome: Mado, Bonsoiree, Smoque, and more.
