Thus far the Cheap Eater, aka Kevin Pang, has delved into Chinatown, authentic ramen spots, and a Filipino breakfast, so it’s kind of fun to see him wandering around the food court at the Lincoln Park Whole Foods. He finds the barbecue “very good for a supermarket,” the tempura “thick and dense, the opposite of how it should be,” and most everything else delicious. Especially great is the gordita al pastor, which is an “intensely citrus-marinated pork shoulder is shaved off the spit, with spicy black bean smear, fried plantains and guacamole atop a catcher’s mitt-size fried corn masa.” [Trib]

Early on, Bruno admits that the food at Timothy O’Toole’s Pub “isn’t anything to write home about,” but that doesn’t actually stop him from writing about it. The pub grub is basic and solid, and the wings are honestly “finger licking good.” Who knew he had such a soft spot for fried food: “Who doesn’t like a basket or bucket of food while watching TV?” [Sun-Times]
