Where is the line between a good old fashioned pub and a gastropub? Owen & Engine, which opens tomorrow on the eastern fringe of Logan Square, seems to be striving very hard for the former. The pictures inside showcase a whole lot of wood, and they’ll be serving up such classics as fish and chips, bubble and squeak, and meat pies. But they are also serving brick chicken wings, steamed mussels, and housemade charcuterie. So is a gastropub just place that cares about food, or can a pub serve top quality food, too?

The official menu hasn’t been released yet, but we somehow tracked down the beer menu. While you can get a proper pint of Fullers London Pride, most of the list stays local with Goose Island, Bells, and Three Floyds all making appearances. But it’s the food we are most interested in. There is a handy little slideshow on the official website that showcases a few of the offerings.

The only issue may be the location. Though this is called Logan Square, our handy Google Map of neighborhoods shows this clearly as Avondale. Also, it’s right across the street from a movie theater. It feels a little out of the way and secluded, which is a bit of a shame for something as handsome as this place. We dropped by to take a peek in the windows, and it looks like this is more than just a cheap “pub” facade. Once again, we’ll have to wait until tomorrow to see for sure.
