In other utterly strange news, it looks like the latest controversial WikiLeak dug up some food news about the Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Chicago. The Karzai family owned Helmand restaurant at 3201 N. Halsted St. in the 90’s, and his brother, Ahmed Wali Karzai, ran the operation. Phil Vettel even reviewed the restaurant in 1995! Though Ahmed has been accused of being involved with the drug trade in Afghanistan (which he denies), he apparently has nothing but nice things to say about Chicago. According to the New York Times, while being investigated he tried to “win over the Americans with nostalgic tales about his years running a Chicago restaurant near Wrigley Field.” [NYT via Trib]
