Do Not Underestimate the Power of Next

Now that people desiring to eat Grant Achatz’s take on Thai food have proven they can crash the Next ticketing site, they’re turning their power in other directions. Yesterday morning, the Next Facebook page reported that “some restaurant in Helsinki has appropriated all of our food and even interior shots as their own.” The restaurant, Ravintola Kantipur, which serves Nepalese food, surely doesn’t offer anything that looks anything like Next’s elegant Thai platings. But not only did they use Next food shots, they even appeared to employ a certain slender, sandy-haired American chef.

Then came the ominous instruction from the Next mothership: “Maybe our FB friends can send them a few thousand emails telling them how uncool that is :-).” (We believe that last is the smiley for “Bwahahahaha!”) Within hours the full global capacity of the Next system (let’s call it Skynext) had been focused on the Helsinki restaurant, crashing their site. It’s back up this morning… with a single stock photo of grilled chicken. [Next/Facebook]
