Mayor Emanuel already works out seven days a week and is getting ready for a triathlon; now he wants the rest of Chicago to get in shape. Yesterday he unveiled “Healthy Chicago,” a 12-point plan to help address obesity, teen smoking, and the lack of healthy food in some neighborhoods. But it’s not just the general public he’s targeting. Citing that “6 to 8 percent of employees drive two-thirds of health care costs,” Mayor Emanuel unveiled a “wellness plan” for government employees. Eventually, you’ll be able to check online to track how the city is doing with its weigh-ins. Sounds fun! We’re guessing this is being modeled after Mayor Bloomberg’s similar efforts in New York, which have tackled smoking and trans fats. Still, not everyone is so wild about what Bloomberg has done.
