We are used to restaurants refusing to capitalize their name, using German letters, or deciding to go article-less occasionally just because they can, but what are we supposed to do with Balena’s new logo? Yes, that is an upside down ‘a’ masquerading as an ‘e.’ Our initially rage calmed after a few minutes, and we’ve actually grown to quite enjoy this sign — even if it did initially give us concern on how we’d replicate it online. Turns out, creating your own upside ‘a’ is much easier than expected.
There are actually sites out there that will flip your letters upside down. All one needs to do is plug the ‘a’ into the system, and then copy and paste the ’ɐ’ into the appropriate place. It’s that easy. If you’re one of those people that needs a code, & # 5 9 2 ; (with no spaces in between) also gets the job done. So, it’s not nearly as hard to write about Balɐna as we first thought! Still, we’re thinking that we’re going to stick with Balena for the time being.
In non-typography Balena news, Kevin Boehm has been tweeting out various pictures of the renovations. Last week we took a look at a rendering of the new front, and he’s also taken a picture of how the inside is progressing. Oh, and don’t forget that just about every chef in town is psyched about this opening.
