First off, the 26th annual Berghoff Oktoberfest starts next week, running from Wednesday, September 14 until Friday, September 16. Once again, it will be held at the John C. Kluczynski Federal Plaza, and we hope you know the drill: This yearly tradition is the perfect excuse to listen to questionable German bands, snack on sausages, and drink beer during the work day without shame — this is a cultural event, after all. But if you stop by on September 15 between 3 and 5 p.m., you’ll also see something new. The Berghoff is hoping to construct a 45-foot-long bratwurst, which may break a record or two.

What record will it break? Various sources have claimed that this will break a Guinness World Record, but we’re having a hard time tracking down that official record. We found the world’s largest vegetarian bratwurst, which was 101 meters — that’s 331.364829 feet, by the way — but that certainly doesn’t count. The self-proclaimed World’s Largest Bratfest takes place in Madison, Wisconsin, but that is very different from the world’s longest brat. The organizers don’t even mention Guinness, simply claiming that this will be the “Midwest’s Longest Brat.”

We’re slightly confused. That said, we can’t wait to see the finished product. And if the pride and glory of an incredibly long sausage isn’t enough to attract you to the festival, you should also know that pieces of the brat will be sold to help raise money for the Mercy Home for Boys & Girls.
