We were working in our lab, late last night, when some food world news came in that gave us an awful fright: starting tonight, some of Chicago’s best-known food trucks will be taking part in the Admiral Theatre’s Halloween extravaganza, Rise of the Stripping Dead. On the stage will be a variety of Goth-tinged burlesque shows, such as “Strip For Pain: The World’s Most Dangerous Game Show” and Jim Rose Circus veteran “Mark the Knife.” Outside the theater will be… food trucks including (on different nights) Gaztro-Wagon, Tamale Spaceship and Glutton Force Five. So never again do you have to watch zombie strippers without having a big platter of food truck tamales in front of you. There, we just summed up 2011 America in a single sentence. Rise of the Stripping Dead runs tonight through Friday night.
In slightly less disturbing Halloween news, Lula Cafe, which has dressed itself up for Halloween as things ranging from faux-Irish bar O’Lulahan’s to heavy metal bar Lula’s Corner, plans to dress up this year as a… well, it looks a lot like a taco chain with a bell in its logo, apparently. In case you were paralyzed with terror that they would actually be serving 39 cent mystery meat tacos or something, though, chef-owner Jason Hammel hastened to assure Time Out Chicago that their version of completely inauthentic American Mexican food would be made of the usual good stuff: “Think Slagel Farm beef, ground in-house, with an awesome mix of cheeses from Lisa [Futterman, the cheesemonger] at Pastoral, handmade tortillas, Werp Farm lettuce…you get the idea. That’s the taco. And we’re also doing salads in taco shells, those sweet cinnamon fried twists, carne asada in the sope-boatlike-things.
