That’s Not Parmesan: Pizza Place Busted For Heroin

A Buffalo Grove pizza place was the target of a major sting Thursday for serving as cover for a drug smuggling operation. DeLuca’s Pizzeria and Catering in Buffalo Grove opened this summer, but law enforcement officials seem to have zeroed in on its alleged real business very quickly— smuggling heroin, marijuana and methamphetamine from Mexico. Owners Maria Garza and Carmelo Rios and four others were arrested and charged with criminal drug conspiracy, and law enforcement officials are claiming that $900,000 in drugs was recovered. Given that law enforcement officials say that the arrests were the result of a six month joint (no pun intended) undercover operation, they must have been on to the operation the moment the first large-supreme-no-mushrooms-with-a-side-of-oregano went out the door.
