Michael Altenberg, chef-owner of Bistro Campagne and of the recently-closed Crust, died suddenly at his home Friday night, Eater reports. The chef, who was 48, was found unresponsive by his wife Julie, who called paramedics; they were unable to revive him. He is survived by his wife and three sons from a previous marriage. Altenberg worked in Italy, for Jean Banchet at Le Francais and helming Tucci Milan for Lettuce Entertain You before starting Campagnola in Evanston. He opened Bistro Campagne in Lincoln Square in 2002, and was an early proponent of local and organic ingredients, particularly at Crust, which was the first certified organic restaurant in Chicago. Julie Altenberg says for now she intends to continue running Bistro Campagne as it is. [Eater]
