The French Market in the Ogilvie Transportation Center (aka the Metra station on Canal Street), which everyone agrees is pretty but which didn’t take off in its first iteration as its developers hoped, is working hard at adding new offerings, says an article in today’s Crain’s by Brigid Sweeney. Besides a new 13,000-square foot restaurant, O’Vie’s Bar & Grill, opening in another section of the station, the French Market has or is about to gain five new tenants.

One, of course, is John desRosiers’ Wisma, offering artisanal prepared foods; we spoke with desRosiers about his entry into the French Market here. Also already open is EJ Sushi, a sister restaurant to West Town’s Kai Sushi, and a Superior Nut & Candy shop, while this week brought Klay Oven, an Indian restaurant that’s been a mainstay of River North for decades, offering made to order bowls and chai. And starting in a couple of weeks, Spicy Monkey Soup Company will offer homemade vegetarian soups and sandwiches. Overall, the diversity and interest of the market continues to improve, and having suffered through mediocre lunch downtown more times than we care to remember, we wish anything new and high quality to open there the best.
