The Burger Desk at Grub Street Chicago has been receiving a lot of news lately, but we've been cowering under the Burger Desk in terror of pink slime, so it took an all-natural burger to lure us out to post something. Indie Burger at 1034 W. Belmont uses certified organic, 100% grass fed beef as well as organic greens and vegetables and non-HFCS sodas and, for breakfast when it starts next month, La Colombe coffee and Bleeding Heart Bakery pastries. They say they use local farms where possible, so we don't know how closely they follow that, but what we do know is that the interior is pretty eco-cool, with reclaimed barn wood from Minnesota on the walls, old South Side church pews and soda-bottle-plastic chairs for seating, and an in-house composting and recycling program to reduce waste. As for the indie part, they have an upcoming concert listing on their homepage, but stopped short of naming their jalapeño burger the Arcade Fire or things like that, thankfully. You might expect all of this excruciatingly correct hipness to be the setup to a high-priced punchline, but in fact all sandwiches are $7 or $8, which is more than a pink slimeburger but not crazy high at all, making it a reasonable choice for environmentally conscious Lakeview residents and families who, nevertheless, want to get their beef on.
