Beneath the image of Paula Deen, there's... Paula Deen living up to her image:
Meeting Paula Deen is like meeting someone wearing a Paula Deen costume. Many famous people look less airbrushed the closer you get. Deen, 65, looks like Paula Deen. Meaning, her tall pouffy head of silver hair stands out no matter how many assistants with clipboards surround her. When the entourage clears she smiles, and teeth whiter than fresh whalebone actively compete with her hair for attention.
That at least is what we come away with from Christoper Borrelli's piece on her in the Tribune. He chatted with her at her Joliet Horseshoe Casino restaurant, which he generally enjoyed with the limits of its obvious industrial-sized calculation, and though he presses her on the central issue of her diabetes— why did she keep serving this kind of food and not fess up to diabetes until she had an endorsement deal in place?— it all just kind of rolls off the jovial, folksy Deen, like trying to get a firm grip on a pound of butter.
