Tamarkin Likes Red Door in the Summer, Ruby Finds RPM Italian Growing Up

Nagrant's off, Vettel does an al fresco roundup, and Sula was busy with Reader Best-Ofs, so it's a good week to get attention as a restaurant reviewer. The only big daily/weekly names on the job this week were Time Out's, and David Tamarkin gives three stars to Red Door for the easygoing pleasure of eating Troy Graves' food on the former Duchamp patio: "The menu at Red Door appears at a glance to be pretty heavy—steaks, sloppy joes, poutine—and in addition to enjoying the nice weather, I thought being outdoors would provide an airiness I might not find on the plate. But that poutine, layered with chicken confit and spiked with curry, was not nearly as heavy as poutine can get. And some dishes, such as an oyster ssam that paired the crisp seafood with fiery kimchi, and a meaty chicken thigh swathed with lemongrass, were light, bright and summery. When less successful food came to the table, it wasn’t heaviness that was the problem but rather execution: A burger with bacon jam arrived joyless and overcooked. A hanger steak badly needed salt." He says Red Door's set for now, but "the place seemed to be letting the pleasant patio do all the heavy lifting... eventually it’s going to get cold out—what’s Red Door going to do then?" [TOC]

Romney Staffers, More Fun Than Their Boss, Frolic at Bathroom Bar

Did not get busy in a nightclub bathroom.Photo: AP

Mitt Romney might be stone-cold sober, but that doesn't mean his staffers can't have a little bit of fun! HuffPo says Mitt's minions spent $400 wining and dining at Arizona's Mint Restaurant and Ultra Lounge. And here's a fun little detail: The nightspot is known for its tempting coed Champagne bathroom, which according to one review takes "socializing in the bathroom to a new level."

Video: M Burger Stands Up For Their Lollapalooza Burger

Chef Tim Hockett, the tallest man in hamburgers.

"Who knows, we may go over and help Edzo's out if we get bored," M Burger Chef Tim Hockett says. This is just a joke, coming as it does right after he revealed that he expects to make somewhere between 4000 and 10,000 burgers a day at M Burger's Lollapalooza stand. By comparison, between them the three existing M Burger locations currently make... 4000 burgers a day. So a slow Lollapalooza day would be as big as the whole chain, and a busy one would be where they hope to be by 2016 or something. We met up with Hockett outside the Huron location, where he revealed a number of interesting things about the Lettuce Entertain You burger chain— like Eddie Lakin of Edzo's, they did a lot of classic burger-eating around the midwest to determine what made a burger great; the fries are from Washington state and were chosen because a higher starch content makes for a crispier fry; and they deliberate aim for a shake you can actually drink with a straw, figuring that downtowners on a lunch break don't have time to eat it spoonful by spoonful. Find out more about M Burger's plans for Lollapalooza, plus the all-important question of which Lolla band M Burger is, in our 2-1/2 minute video below.

Debbi Peek Leaves The Bristol/Balena For Southern Wine & Spirits

What was it we were saying the other day, about mixologists who give up "the working with drunks till 2 a.m. part— you know, the glamor— and [go] in-house for some large beverage distributor," where they get to influence other bars while going home at family-friendly hours. Well, here goes another one— Debbi Peek, who helped put The Bristol on the map and most recently developed Balena's radical Amaro bitters-based cocktail program, is leaving those gigs to go in-house for Southern Wine & Spirits as Illinois mixologist. She told 312 Dining Diva, "I am still going to consult on the menu[s at The Bristol and Balena], there are no menu changes in the near future... [The Boka Restaurant Group folks] are very happy for me and excited about my new venture." [312 Dining Diva]

Openings! Piccolo Sogno Due, The Savoy, Baume & Brix, City Porch

It seems that at its present rate of expansion, by 2019 Chicago's restaurant scene will engulf the four innermost planets. We have so many openings we didn't even know about until five minutes ago, we hardly even have time to go to Trenchermen previews. Let's start with Piccolo Sogno Due, which you knew about (sequel to Piccolo Sogno, this time with Todd Stein joining Tony Priolo as the wacky but lovable Italian restaurant owners who can't seem to keep out of hijinks). You knew about it, but now Priolo has announced an opening date: July 5. Now on to other openings you may not know about.
