New Belden Deli Closes After Death of Co-Owner Paul Leff

Back in June we wrote about the reopening of a deli in the Lincoln Park building best known for former tenant Tower Records, which was on the site of a well-known 70s and 80s deli called Belden Deli (it’s at Belden & Clark). At the time there was a dispute over the name with another Belden Deli that opened downtown, from a family associated (somewhat less than directly) with the original Belden Deli. It took a while for the word to get out but sadly we have to report that the one on Belden has closed permanently due to the sudden death of one of the two founders, Paul Leff, on September 11. Leff, who was 48, was a Lettuce Entertain You veteran who also co-owned Max’s Deli (a previous tenant in the space) with fellow owner Leon Greenberg. At the time the restaurant announced that it would be closed for two weeks but it has not reopened and a local discussion site reports that Groupon buyers have been notified of its permanent closing.
