In addition to losing its diesel-powered food truck to storm surge, Red Hook Lobster Pound lost its dining area and prep kitchen to five feet of flood waters last year during Hurricane Sandy. The Van Brunt Street’s holding tanks were destroyed, most of its inventory spoiled, and, in all, the business had assessed more than $100,000 of damage by the time power was turned back on. Owners Susan Povich and Ralph Gorham have rebuilt the business, outfitting the space with a new kitchen and a 500-gallon lobster tank, and while its truck is still being rebuilt and will not be back on the road until April, the Pound fully expects to reopen on March 1 at noon. The store will initially be open from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesdays through Sundays, then until 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The lobster-roll purveyor’s reopening coincides with the return of the neighborhood’s 52,000-square-foot Fairway Market, which was also damaged last year in the storm. [Official site, Earlier]
