SoMa may be about to lose one of its legendary leather dens, but another, the SF Eagle,* is about to get new life. As we reported last year, a pair of new gay owners, Mike Leon and Alex Montiel, stepped in to take over the bar after another deal involving some non-gay investors fell through. The LGBT community became incensed at the thought of ceding this particular piece of real estate, and with the help of the Board of Supervisors, it was returned to gay hands. There have been a lot of delays in reopening the place, however, with a recent promise to reopen in time for Bear Weekend, starting Valentine’s Day, getting rescinded due to ongoing construction. Update: The owners have just announced that they are, in fact, opening this Sunday for their first beer bust in two years, in celebration of the new Mr. San Francisco Leather.
Longtime supporter of the bar Anna Conda also just posted an event, the return of her Charlie Horse drag show, at the Eagle starting on April 6.
Leon and Moteil are also accepting job applications, as you can see here. They’re also promising a regular event called Thursday Night Live, featuring bands both local, and on national tours.
And, of course, the patio will be restored to its former glory, and Sunday beer busts should return just in time for spring. “The bar and patio has a longstanding relationship with the LGBT community and often considered SF’s first LGBT Community Center, long before the city opened one,” writes the team. “We have every intention of preserving this legacy and this space will always be available for fundraisers, charity events and promotions within the gay community.”
Update 2: Actually, it sounds like they’ll officially be making it open by Saturday night, March 2.
