The first place we, and we expect much of anybody in Chicago, heard of New York-based Danny Macaroons in Chicago was via the Chicago Food Film Festival a couple of years ago, when it showed Liza de Guia’s short film Danny Macaroons: There’s No Such Thing as Boring Coconut Macaroons Anymore (see it below), followed by an appearance and tasting with the man himself. Danny Macaroons was started by entrepreneur Dan Cohen, who sold his artisanal macaroons to New York coffee shops and really took off when Bergdorf Goodman started carrying them. Now Crain’s reports that his nostalgic, comfy treats are being imported into Chicago, fittingly enough for something so comfy because he acquired a Chicago girlfriend and started visiting the city. He’s got a few spots, including La Colombe Cafe, Belly Shack and The Haute Dog, signed up already, but if he gets enough customers on board, he’ll start producing them here as well. [Crain’s]
