Long Island City’s M. Wells Steakhouse launched its first-ever brunch service last weekend, and as you might expect from chef Hugue Dufour, the food is totally crazy and inventive. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sundays — and only Sundays — he’s making dishes like seafood-sausage eggs Benedict, sanguette with scrabbled eggs, foie gras and oats, and, of course, the restaurant’s famed bone-in burger. (And if that’s not daring enough, you can order a side of straight-up foie gras for $15.)
But perhaps the most exciting dish is the Russian Waffle — a riff on Dufour’s Solomon Gundy, one of the greatest hits on his dinner menu. This breakfast version includes smoked sturgeon, paddlefish caviar, trout roe, hard-boiled eggs, créme fraîche, horseradish, dill, pickled fennel, and, of course, a potato waffle.
