The FDA Could Ban Trans Fats As Early As Mid-June

It seems like the FDA is finally, really, actually about to make good on 2013’s threat to ban trans fats in food. The new policy would remove partially hydrogenated oils from the list of “generally recognized as safe” foods. While there’s no official date for the announcement yet, insider murmurs have pegged it at “any day now” for a while, and sources tell the New York Post that day could in fact be June 15.

Once Michael Bloomberg got the trans-ban ball rolling in 2006, the tide turned pretty fast against partially hydrogenated oils, at least among policy thinkers. Even fast-food companies are taking note: McDonald’s worst offender, a Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese, is down to 2.5 grams of trans fat, and even Crisco, of all things, now comes trans-fat-free. There are still heavy-hitting holdouts, though — packages of Pepperidge Farm cookies, almost anything at Popeyes — so go enjoy them while (and if) you still can.
