This Animated Short Explains Why It’s So Hard to Be a Street Vendor in NYC

As the Cinnamon Snail’s Adam Sobel explained to Grub, New York’s laws regarding food-truck permits are extremely prohibitive. Since 1981, there’s been a cap on the number of permits granted, and with a waiting list that can take 20 years to get through, many vendors have to purchase them on the black market.

In response, the Street Vendor Project has launched a new campaign, called #LiftTheCaps, and the group has put legislation before the City Council to raise the number of permits to 25,000 for food. (Currently, there are about 3,000 permits for all of New York!) The vendors have also created an informative little video to explain why they think it’s necessary:
